The BSN (burgerservicenummer), previously known as the Sofi or Social-Fiscal number, is the first bureaucratic hurdle that expats in the Netherlands must navigate.

What is the BSN / Sofi Number? The BSN is a unique citizen service number assigned to everyone living in the Netherlands. It is essential for interacting with Dutch authorities, such as starting a job, opening a bank account, paying taxes, using healthcare services, applying for benefits, and changing your address. It also helps prevent identity fraud and errors in name spelling.

The Sofi number was the former social security number issued by the Dutch Tax Office (Belastingdienst). Since November 2007, Sofi numbers were automatically converted to BSNs, and the issuance of Sofi numbers ceased in January 2014.

Note: A BSN does not automatically grant expats the right to work in the Netherlands. Depending on their country of origin, they may need to apply for a work permit.

How to Apply for a Citizen Service Number? You will receive your BSN when you register with the municipality (gemeente) where you will live. Anyone staying in the Netherlands for more than four months must register with their municipality within five days of arrival.

EU Citizens: Need to provide a valid proof of identity (e.g., passport) and their address.
Non-EU Expats: Must present additional documents such as a residence permit and employment contract.

For non-EU expats applying for a residence permit, the registration with the municipality will be provisional. After registration, you will receive a pre-registration letter (BvB) from the IND, which will be returned to your municipality once you apply for your residence permit. Your registration and BSN will then be confirmed.

What to Do If You Lose Your BSN? If you lose your BSN, you can find it on several official documents, such as:
