About The University of Copenhagen, Denmark
The University of Copenhagen, established in 1479, is a renowned public research institution located in Copenhagen, Denmark. Holding the distinction of being the second-oldest university in Scandinavia, it consistently ranks among the top universities in the Nordic countries and Europe.
Initially founded under the approval of Pope Sixtus IV, Christian I of Denmark established the University of Copenhagen as a Catholic teaching institution with a primary focus on theology. However, during the Lutheran Reformation in 1537, King Christian III re-established it. Historically, the university’s primary role was the education of clergymen until the 18th century. Subsequent reforms in the 18th and 19th centuries transformed the University of Copenhagen into a modern, secular institution. The main subjects shifted to science and the humanities, replacing the earlier theological emphasis.
Comprising six faculties, the University of Copenhagen conducts teaching across four distinct campuses within Copenhagen. The university boasts 36 departments, 122 research centers, museums, and botanical gardens in Copenhagen, along with research stations across Denmark and Greenland. Notably, the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, combined with the public hospitals of the Capital and Zealand Region, forms the conglomerate known as Copenhagen University Hospital.
The University of Copenhagen is associated with several significant scientific theories and schools of thought. For instance, the Niels Bohr Institute, affiliated with the university, gave rise to the renowned Copenhagen Interpretation of quantum mechanics. Other notable entities include the Copenhagen School of Security Studies from the Department of Political Science, along with the Copenhagen School of Theology and the Copenhagen School of Linguistics.
